Nestled among the lodges and cellars of Oporto, Taylor’s is one of the oldest of the founding Port Houses. Dating from 1692, the House quickly realised that the more muscular wines of the upper Douro Valley greater suited the British taste, and ventured into previously uncultivated areas to seek out vineyard sites. At Taylor's, protection of the environment and the ecological well-being of the region are paramount. Terraces are planted specifically to avoid topsoil erosion, maintenance of vegetal banks encourage biodiversity, herbicides are not used, and distribution of vines throughout the vineyard is critical to ensure they can thrive naturally.
First Estate is an excellent introduction to the Taylor’s style of intensely fruity but elegant and well balanced Ports. It is blended from full bodied young red wines from the Cima Corgo area, then mellowed by several years of ageing in oak vats. Taylor’s First Estate Port is a classic reserve blend produced to commemorate the firm’s acquisition in 1744 of its first property in the upper Douro Valley, the Casa dos Alambiques at Lugar das Lages.
Deep ruby in colour, it has a potent nose of concentrated fruit, crammed with blackcurrant, plum and liquorice flavours. Its luscious texture is supported by a firm tannic structure giving the wine restrained elegance for which Taylor’s Ports are famous. Sensational with a gooey chocolate fondant, or a piece of farmhouse cheddar.
