Nestled among the lodges and cellars of Oporto, Taylor’s is one of the oldest of the founding Port Houses. Dating from 1692, the House quickly realised that the more muscular wines of the upper Douro Valley greater suited the British taste, and ventured into previously uncultivated areas to seek out vineyard sites. At Taylor's, protection of the environment and the ecological well-being of the region are paramount. Terraces are planted specifically to avoid topsoil erosion, maintenance of vegetal banks encourage biodiversity, herbicides are not used, and distribution of vines throughout the vineyard is critical to ensure they can thrive naturally.
Late Bottled Vintage, as the name suggests, is bottled later, remaining in wood between four and six years. During this relatively long period of wood ageing, an LBV matures and settles down - it is ready to drink when bottled, does not need to be decanted and can be served by the glass for several weeks after the cork is drawn. LBV was developed as a high quality but more affordable and immediately drinkable alternative to Vintage port to be enjoyed by the glass on everyday occasions. It was originally created in 1970 by Taylor’s current Chairman, Alistair Robertson.
Deep ruby, very dark at the core, with a narrow red rim. The nose is elegant and complex, revealing multiple dimensions of aroma. A fine fruity blend of raspberry, cassis, plum and apricot provides the base for delicate floral scents, resiny notes of rock rose and discreet hints of liquorice. The palate has plenty of volume and body, supported by tense linear tannins, and very clean, crisp flavours of berry fruit and plum which continue into the long finish. A beautiful expression of Taylor’s LBV, poised and slightly understated, with a finesse and intricacy usually only found in a Vintage Port. Taylor’s LBV is the perfect finish to any meal. It does not need to be decanted and should be served in a generously proportioned wine glass so that its rich fruity nose can be enjoyed to the full. Excellent with fully flavoured cheeses, especially blue cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort. It is also delicious with desserts made with chocolate or berry fruits.
