Abadia Retuerta Selección Especial 2013 (1x 75cl)

Produced from a selection of the best grapes from Abadia Retuerta's vineyards, this deep coloured, complex red combines the richness of Tempranillo, the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon and the strength of Syrah. The nose is fresh and vibrant, full of ripe black and red fruits combined with lingering notes of balsamic, liquorice and sweet oak wood. The full bodied, creamy palate is structured by smooth tannins, juicy ripe fruits and a hint of cedar. 2011 was one of Abadía Retuerta's best ever vintages, delivering a style of wine that can be drunk with pleasure right now or left to develop further complexities over the next few years.

Beronia Rioja Gran Reserva 2009 (1x75cl)

Awarded 91 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their March 2017 edition review of Premium Rioja (see blue link below).

Beronia Gran Reserva 2008 - March 2017 Decanter review

The 2008 harvest was classified by the Rioja Regulatory Council as 'Very Good' as it showed extremely high quality which allowed for the production of exceptional wines (including this one!).

For the production of this Gran Reserva, the best grapes from the oldest vineyards were hand-harvested. Following the harvest, the best bunches were selected in the winery. The grapes then underwent a slow and controlled alcoholic fermentation with periodic pumping over to extract colour and aromas.  Following this, the wine remained in French oak barrels for 26 months.

Beronia Gran Reserva 2008 shows a powerful and deep maroon colour. On the nose, it is intense and complex with dried fruits (such as dates) standing out over a base of chocolate and sweet spice from the French oak. On the palate this wine is silky and meaty with pleasant tannins, giving structure and complexity.  This wine shows great personality with body, elegance and intense flavours.

This Gran Reserva is best when decanted before serving due to the long time it has spent ageing in the bottle.  It is ideal when served with red meats, game, mature cheeses and also with chocolate desserts.  Drink it now or you can keep this wine until 2024 before opening it.

Bodegas Benito Urbina Gran Reserva 1996 (1x 75cl)

Awarded 92 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their March 2017 edition review of premium Riojas (see blue link below).

Bodegas Benito Urbina Gran Reserva 1996 - March 2017 Decanter review

Bodegas Urbina is a winery which has been in the Urbina family for four generations since 1870. The present winery was designed, built and run by the family in 1986 and was created to facilitate producing fine wines.  Urbina has 75 hectares of vineyards located at two main vineyard sites - the first is at Cuzcurrita de Rio Turon, a well-known area for producing Riojas capable of ageing for many years and the others are at Uruñuela, in the heart of the Rioja DOC, which consistently produces wines of great quality and body. The grapes used are from vines aged over 20 years old. The vines are grown in accordance with traditional practices, no herbicides and limited use of pesticides and fungicides.

The Urbina Gran Reserva is harvested by hand and the skins remain in contact with the must for 28 days.  It is then fermented at a temperature of 28°C using indigenous yeast.  The wine is matured for 24 months in American oak before being bottled and matured for another 48 months before being released for sale.

The Urbina Gran Reserva 1996 has a splendid ripe, complex nose, is reddish-garnet in colour with harmonious and well-balanced oak and fruit tannins.  It also displays intense rich fruit, great finesse and velvet smoothness on the palate.  It goes perfectly with slow roasted lamb shoulder or with game - particularly duck and pheasant.

Bodegas Protos Crianza 2013 (1x75cl)

The guiding philosophy of Protos is "Quality above all". For this reason, the whole process leading to the production of their wine undergoes an in-depth analysis. The vineyards are controlled exhaustively by both technicians and experts throughout the growth cycle, yielding a production of the highest quality. This also gives them in-depth information about all the grapes to be used before they reach the winery.

Harvesting is 100% manual. For several years, half of the production has been gathered in 20-kilo boxes; the grapes are then spread over sorting tables. This allows them to guarantee that only completely healthy, whole grapes reach the fermentation tanks.

This wine spent 14 months in French (⅔) and American (⅓) oak barrels before maturing in bottle for a further 12 months.

The Protos Crianza has a bright and intense cherry colour with a garnet rim.  On the nose there are red fruit aromas which are powerful yet elegant, with a dry minerality as well as some cocoa bean, creamy oak and hints of spices. The flavour is rich and powerful, fruity with good acidity, a smoky aftertaste and a long toasty finish.

This wine is a good match for grilled red meat, cured meat, game birds, small game, light stews and mild cheese.

Bodegas Protos Reserva 2006 (1x 75cl)

The guiding philosophy of Protos is "Quality above all". For this reason, the whole process leading to the production of their wine undergoes an in-depth analysis. The vineyards are controlled exhaustively by both technicians and experts throughout the growth cycle, yielding a production of the highest quality. Harvesting is 100% manual and the production was gathered in 20-kilo boxes; the grapes are then spread over sorting tables. This allows them to guarantee that only completely healthy, whole grapes reach the fermentation tanks. There is skin contact during the maceration and fermentation process, lasting 24 days, giving the wine greater depth and colour.

The wine then spends 18 months in French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels and 18 months in bottle.

The Protos Reserva has an intense bright dark cherry colour with garnet rim. It is powerful on the nose with black fruit, toasty, spicy, and creamy oak aromas making it both complex and elegant.  It has powerful, toasty flavours with a good level of acidity and rounded tannins while still being fruity and spicy. This wine has a good structure and a lingering finish.

This wine is best suited for matching to stronger flavours such as game and dark meats.  It would also be a good accompaniment to strongly flavoured cheeses such as Manchego or mature Cheddar.

Darenberg The Sticks And Stones Tempranillo Grenache 2011 (1x 75cl)

To taste this exotic mix of Iberian varieties is to embark upon a tantalizing journey of the senses. The nose exhibits an enticing mix of red, black and purple fruits such as plum, blackcurrant and dark cherry truffle. There is another layer of secondary aromas though, that makes this a seriously complex wine, mushrooms, autumn leaves and earth. A similar theme is found on the palate with flavours of red licorice, spice and peat all evident. The hallmark of this vintage though is a rhubarb, ironstone-like note that adds an incredible core of mineral tannins and bright acidity. The wine is both lively and complex at the same time.

£15.81

The Gran Reserva has a brilliant ruby-red colour with tinges of brick red. This is a complex wine with exceptional concentration and a long finish.
