Altos de Corral, Rioja, Bodegas Corral 2009 (1x 75cl)

Awarded 92 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their March 2017 edition review of Premium Rioja (see blue link below).

Altos de Corral, Rioja, Bodegas Corral 2009 - March 2017 Decanter review

Made from 100% Tempranillo from a superb 10-hectare vineyard on a prominent hillside, at an altitude of 600 metres, overlooking Navarrete in the Rioja Alta. The soil in this vineyard is extremely poor and rocky and yields are 30% below the average for Rioja, resulting in wines of great concentration and richness.

Harvest and selection is carried out by hand. Aged for 24 months in French oak casks.

Intense red cherry in colour. Complex, dominant flavour of red berries, well-assembled with soft notes of vanilla and new fine oak barrel. Soft tannins, full-bodied and a lingering finish.

£30.64

Beronia Rioja Crianza Magnum 2011 (1x 1.5L)

This Beronia Crianza shows an intense cherry colour. Attractive nose with red fruits and floral aromas in perfect harmony with mineral and cocoa notes. A balanced and sweet palate with the fruit standing out over a base of chocolate and coffee from the time spent in American oak.

Bodegas Protos Gran Reserva 2004 (1x 75cl)

The guiding philosophy of Protos is "Quality above all". For this reason, the whole process leading to the production of their wine undergoes an in-depth analysis. The vineyards are controlled exhaustively by both technicians and experts throughout the growth cycle, yielding a production of the highest quality. This also gives them in-depth information about all the grapes to be used before they reach the winery.

The vines used to make the Gran Reserva are all over 60 years old. This wine is only ever made in excellent vintages. Harvesting is 100% manual. For several years, the production has been gathered in 20-kilo boxes; the grapes are then spread over sorting tables. This allows them to guarantee that only completely healthy, whole grapes reach the fermentation tanks.  The wine then spends 24 months ageing in French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels before maturing for a further 36 months in bottle.

The Protos Gran Reseva has a deep cherry colour, which is bright and intense. The nose is very expressive and powerful with complex, elegant, roasted coffee and dark chocolate aromas, as well as candied fruit. On the palate it is fleshy, full-bodied and powerful. It also has creamy, spicy notes and a seductive, lingering finish.

This wine should always be enjoyed with a meal. Our suggestions include roast lamb, roast pork, roast beef, hearty stews, big game and mature cheese such as a full flavoured Cheddar or Stilton.

£43.55

El Coto, Coto de Imaz Rioja Gran Reserva 2008 (1x1.5L)

The Gran Reserva has a brilliant ruby-red colour with tinges of brick red. Mature and elegant, the wine’s rich aromatic complexity is initially subtle, revealing itself more and more as the wine breathes. Toasted oak nuances and coconut give way to notes of leather and damp earth from bottle ageing. On the palate, silky, rounded tannins accompany fresh red berries, dried raisins and spicy notes. This is a complex wine with exceptional concentration and a long finish.

£30.45

Finca Museum Reserva Real 2009 (1x 1.5L Magnum)

Rich, concentrated and ripe berry fruit flavours combine with a heady mixture of chocolate, liquorice and spice to make this exceptional Spanish red. A gentle giant, ripe and concentrated.
£30.48

Finca Villacreces Pruno Ribera del Duero Magnum 2014 (1x 1.5L Magnum)

Deep cherry-red colour. On the nose, aromas of red fruits blend with hints of spice. The wine is dry but with generous fruit giving a smooth, round texture and fresh acidity to ensure excellent balance. The finish is full, with ripe black and red fruit with spice, vanilla and liquorice touches from the ageing.

£32.64

Izadi Rioja Reserva 2012 (1x 5L)

Glossy ruby in colour. Rich Aromatic intensity with a wonderful balance of red fruit, licorice and hints of gun smoke. Elegant and round on the palate with a long aftertaste full of floral and ripe fruit notes.
£96.25

Pago De Los Capellanes Crianza magnum 2014 (1x 1.5L Magnum)

Prepared with Tempranillo grapes (100%), this wine has a very bright, intense maraschino cherry colour that fades to a Cardinal red rim.

It has a very marked aroma with a good balance of fruit and wood, where tones of vanilla intermingle with well-ripened fruit, black berries and wild fruits. There are also noticeable hints of leather and liquorice, resulting from the mingling of the French oak and the aromas inherent in this variety of grape.

In the mouth, the wine has a smooth texture but fills the palate with balanced flavours, including fine tannins, which help extend the life of the wine. The finish and aftertaste are both long and elegant.

£43.26

Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravels Tempranillo 2013 (1x 6L)

Wild raspberry and plum fruit aromas with spice and a little vanilla from oak barrels. This is an elegant wine with firm but not heavy tannin structure. The texture is silky and there is great persistence of wild fruit flavours on the finish.
