Exel note: we uncovered this in a hidden corner of the UK importer's store. Normally, you'd look with caution at a Chilean Merlot with 8 years on the clock. But the Valdivieso upper Merlots are made rather differently ... especially this, the Single Vineyard wine. We found great popularity (until it recently ran out) in/with the 2012 Valley Selection Merlot, the level below this. That Merlot, and especially this one, had/have great fruit intensity, fine/soft/velvet(t)y tannins and good acidity (for Merlot) and had travelled well through time. Don't expect super-complexity - old Barolo, this is not. But the combination of Merlot's plushness - especially from the ripeness achieved here in Sagrada Familia - and the further softening with age makes this a very attractive glass, especially so at the price.
Based in Lontué in the Curicó Valley, Valdivieso has a wealth of vineyards and the quality of their terroirs is shown by their Single Valley Lot/Valley Selection and Single Vineyard wines. The whole range encapsulates everything that Chile excels at: rich, vibrant flavours and smooth, glossy textures - and the wines deserve the multitude of gongs they have picked up in recent years. Well-travelled Kiwi winemaker, Brett Jackson, has settled in Chile and much of Valdivieso’s success in recent years can be credited to his talent.
Here, Merlot was sourced from the La Primavera Vineyard, in Sagrada Familia, Curico Valley. Vineyards are planted on a free draining gravel clay loam, located on the slopes of the hill in a sheltered warm zone of the valley. These conditions allows for exceptional ripeness, soft tannins and flavour to develop.
