Alpha Domus The Navigator 2010 (1x 75cl)

A complex aroma of ripe berryfruits, plums, violet, liquorice and hints of leather. Influences of sweet vanilla and toast result from oak barrel maturation. The ripe fruit, sweet oak and firm tannins create a robust, complex wine with excellent length.

Alpha Zeta `R` Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso 2015 (1x75cl)

Ruby red in colour, with a concentrated perfume of red and black cherries, with the ripasso adding a dried cherry intensity. Full-bodied on the palate, with lovely balance between opulent cherry-pie character and supple structure.  Good length with a mouthwatering bitter-cherry twist on the finish.

The previoius (2013) vintage was awarded 92 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their May 2017 edition review of Amarones (see blue link below). The 2014 is of excellent - probably better - quality in our view.

The vineyards are situated in the hills outside Verona in the Valpantena Valley. Cool currents blow down the valley from the foothills of the Dolomites, which helps to moderate the climate, enabling the grapes to ripen slowly. This helps the grapes to retain their aromatic compounds and acidity. The soil is a mixture of clay and limestone with good drainage. The vineyards are south-facing and therefore warmer than other parts of Valpolicella.

One of the best harvests in recent years, the grapes in 2013 enjoyed gradual ripening thanks to excellent sunlight rather than heat.

Selected grapes were picked in mid September and left to dry in specially ventilated rooms until the end of January. During this time the grapes lost about 40% of their natural weight. The grapes were destemmed and crushed at the end of January. Fermentation temperature was between 18°-22°C with daily periodic pumping over, while the length of maceration was 20 days. This Amarone was matured in oak (a mixture of large 'botti' and French oak barriques) for 18 months before bottling.

Deep and intense on the nose with perfumes of dried cherries and blueberries, with notes of spiced autumn fruit compote.  On the palate it is powerful but modern, with a lovely balance of ripe tannins and spiced, concentrated savoury cherry fruit character.  A touch of woodsmoke completes the long finish.

Ruby red colour with a youthful rim and perfumes of ripe, fresh cherries and red berries.  Nicely balanced and juicy on the palate, with a supple structure and attractive lively finish.

A clean, crisp and fresh wine that retains plenty of varietal character. Lively and aromatic on the nose, with the classic freshly baked bread crust perfumes and ripe, juicy pear character on the youthful, crisp palate which make this such a popular variety.  Lovely almondy perfumes on the finish, with a twist of lime.

Lovely light pink in appearance with a lifted perfume of wild strawberries, warm cherry pie and sherbet.  Vibrant and fresh on the palate, with a fresh, lively cherry fruit character and a fragrant finish.

Pale lemon in colour. Clean and lively, with a fresh, lightly perfumed almond blossom character on the nose which gives way to a ripe but fresh, apple and pear flavours on the soft palate.  Vivacious citrus notes give the wine a crisp finish.

Nice depth of youthful colour, with perfumes of fresh black cherries. On the palate the wine is soft, ripe and rounded, with an attractive freshness which lifts the cherry compote flavours and accentuates its perfume.

Alto Bajo Chardonnay 2016 (1x 75cl)

Alto Bajo is produced from vineyards across Chile's Valle Central by a terrific team led by winemaker Camilo Viani, who brings vitality and vision - as well as a great eye for winemaking detail.

“Alto Bajo” translates as “High Low” and reflects the varied regional landscape of Chile. This Chardonnay is deliciously fruity with lots of ripe, tropical fruit flavours but also the tiniest hint of vanilla.  It matches well with the following foods: chicken, ham or bacon, pate and terrines.

Made from 100% Tempranillo from a superb 10-hectare vineyard on a prominent hillside, at an altitude of 600 metres, overlooking Navarrete in the Rioja Alta. The soil in this vineyard is extremely poor and rocky and yields are 30% below the average for Rioja, resulting in wines of great concentration and richness.

Harvest and selection is carried out by hand. Aged for 24 months in French oak casks.

Intense red cherry in colour. Complex, dominant flavour of red berries, well-assembled with soft notes of vanilla and new fine oak barrel. Soft tannins, full-bodied and a lingering finish.

Altos Las Hormigas Appellation Altamira Malbec 2014 - October 2016 Decanter review 

Altos Las Hormigas is based in Luján de Cuyo, the only officially recognised appellation in Mendoza and one of the region's premier vine growing areas. The estate is known as a Malbec specialist with a reputation as one of the country's top five producers of this particular variety. 

The wine was matured in 3,500 litre untoasted oak foudres for 18 months, and a further 12 months in bottle. There was a coarse filtration prior to bottling, to ensure that the quality of the wine was not interfered with.

Fresh and delicate on the nose showing layers of red cherries and raspberries combined with herbal notes of wild rocket and thyme and a touch of minerality. On the palate it is elegant and supple with fine tannins providing structure. A graceful, complex, deep and structured wine with considerable length.

Altos Las Hormigas is based in Luján de Cuyo, the only officially recognised appellation in Mendoza and one of the region's premier vine growing areas. The estate is known as a Malbec specialist with a reputation as one of the country's top five producers of this particular variety. Alberto Antonini and fellow Tuscan, Antonio Morescalchi, were so impressed with the vineyards in the area around Mendoza, following their first trip to Argentina in 1995, that they persuaded a few friends to join with them in buying this estate. The estate covers 216 hectares, of which 40 were planted between 1996 and 1999.

Grapes were harvested by hand with delicate and conscious bunch selection. The de-stemmed berries were loaded by gravity to allow a gentle breaking of skins. During fermentation very gentle treatment was used to avoid over extraction. The juice was fermented using native yeast. The wine was matured in 3,500 litre untoasted Foudres (wooden casks) for 18 months, and six months in bottle. There was a coarse filtration prior to bottling, to ensure no interference with the quality of the wine.

A brilliant, purple-red in colour with an enticing nose of flowers, ripe red and black fruits mixed with subtle notes of graphite and flint stone. The complexity of the nose develops further with time and air. The palate is creamy with good depth and softness. Fresh, juicy red fruit flavours abound with round, firm tannins and a backbone of well-integrated acidity. A balanced, complex and long-lasting finish.
