Battle Of Bosworth Puritan Shiraz 2016 (6x 75cl)

Battle of Bosworth is one of the most exciting producers from the McLaren Vale, owing its fame to a series of outstanding single-vineyard wines made from estate-grown fruit. Owner, Joch Bosworth, is regarded as a brilliant organic farmer as well as a top class winemaker, and the Bosworth vineyards are among the most beautiful we have ever seen. Joch plays down his impeccable green credentials, arguing that he is doing nothing new: ‘A lot of what we do in the vineyard is simply old-fashioned grape growing; essentially, our vineyards are run as they would have been 50 years ago before synthetic pesticides and fertilizers became available.’

A pretty little flower called the soursob is Joch’s partner in crime to combat weeds. So important is the soursob that it features on the Battle of Bosworth labels, too.

They have modelled the Puritan on the young Tempranillos that come out of Rioja in Spain. Puritan spends no time in oak and is bottled as soon as it has gone through malolactic fermentation, which occurs after the sugar to alcohol primary fermentation. They have shamelessly copied this model, except with ‘Puritan’ where the wine is bottled without any added preservatives, so it’s as fresh as a daisy, with nothing added. It is made from Shiraz.

The 2016 Puritan is bursting with life, as it should be, given it has barely time to turn around from being picked, fermented and then put immediately to bottle. There are soft plums on the nose and the palate is utterly delicious with black and red fruits, soft tannins and a wonderful finish. Drink alone and enjoy Puritan’s ‘joi de vivre’ or have with a juicy steak.

Beronia Rioja Crianza 2013 (1 x 75cl)

The grapes for this wine were collected at the beginning of October. Following harvest the grapes underwent cold maceration for a few days in order to extract aromas and colour however not tannins. Alcoholic fermentation took place at low temperature of less than 26ºC with periodic pumping over. The wine was then aged in mixed oak barrels of American staves and French tops for 12 months giving both vanilla notes from the American oak and spice from the French oak. The wine was bottled in January 2016 and remained in bottle for 3 months before being released to the market.

This Beronia Crianza shows an intense cherry colour. Attractive nose with red fruits and floral aromas in perfect harmony with mineral and cocoa notes. A balanced and sweet palate with the fruit and liquorice standing out over a base of chocolate and coffee.  Persistant and well structured.

This wine is made using the following grapes: 82% Tempranillo, 14% Garnacha and 4% Mazuelo.

Beronia Verdejo, Rueda 2015 (1x 75cl)

The 2016 vintage was awarded 89 points and Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their July 2017 edition review of Rueda Verdejos (see blue link below)We appreciate it is subjective, but we judge the 2015 to be of equal quality and drinkability, and the 2016 will be coming (y)our way soon!

Beronia Verdejo 2016 - July 2017 Decanter review

The special personality of Beronia Rueda Verdejo comes from the perfect unión of the Verdejo variety and the ‘cascajoso’ stony soil of the region. The vineyard, well ventilated, rich in calcium, magnesium and with excellent drainage, give this Beronia Rueda a unique character.

A wine produced from two different harvests in the same vineyard. An early harvest with fermentation at high temperatures in order to achieve an explosion of aromas and notes of ripe stone fruits. Then a second later harvest fermentated at lower temperatures looking for maturity and more concentration and complexity on the palate. The resulting wine is a blend of the two distinct winemaking techniques to achieve an aromatic wine which is fresh, flavoursome and, at the same time, complex.

Beronia Rueda 2015 shows a bright pale yellow colour with a hint of green. An intense nose with vibrant and persistant herbal, grassy aromas, typical of Verdejo. On the palate it is full, fruity and dry with a long finish.  This 2015 vintage shows and extremely textured mouth due to the quality of the skins giving fine lees. The wine has a balanced acidity and an attractive bitterness that is characteristic of this variety.

This wine should always be served chilled. Ideal with salads or fish, also with white or lean meat dishes.

Domaine Catherine & Dominique Derain Mercurey Rouge, La Plante Chassey 2013 (1x 75cl)

Dominique and Catherine Derain definitely adopt a minimalist approach. They farm biodynamically, hand harvest, do not chaptalize or acidify and use the barest amount of sulphur in their winemaking approach. All the fruit is hand-picked and they destem 90% of their red grapes before fermentation, which occurs in wooden vats. After fermentation the wine is aged in old oak casks for 12-18 months. The couple never use SO2 during the winemaking process, adding only a small amount at bottling for stabilization. The thrilling Mercurey from old biodynamically-tended vines (100 years old) reaches an altogether different level. It is a blend of 85% Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Beurrot (related to the Pinot Gris). There is a silky nature to this Mercurey giving it a supple mouthfeel and a detailed range of raspberry and cherry fruit with a touch of pomegranate. It has lovely spice notes and touch of lavender on the nose. Striking elegance, complexity and length.

Domaine Gramenon Cotes du Rhone Sierra Du Sud 2015 (6x75cl)

Awarded 91 points and Highly Recommended status by Decanter (www.decanter.com) in their May 2017 edition review of the Southern Rhone (see blue link below).

Syrah is stated as the "majority" variety, and we know this to be almost 100% in exceptional years, with huge attention to detail shown by Gramenon to create a beautifully balanced wine. Grapes are manually harvested and macerated for 12 days. Natural yeasts are used in the fermentation, followed by a 7-month ageing before bottling, some part being aged in steel, some in oak barriques

This is bold and elegant Cotes du Rhone, and much above the common herd: it is silky, aromatic, and full of local flavor: lavender, black olive, and ripe blackberry. It will keep for up to 8 years from vintage.
